Meet the Founder

Ahoy! I’m Marissa Rothermel, founder of Calm SEAS -  Special Education Advocacy and Supports. I bring over 20 years of experience working with individuals with special needs, primarily within school-based settings. Throughout my career, I have supported students, families, and educational teams in navigating complex special education systems with a focus on clarity, collaboration, and legally sound practice.

My work is grounded in a student-first philosophy. I am deeply passionate about programming that is individualized to each student’s strengths, needs, and interests, and about ensuring supports are both meaningful and sustainable. I believe effective special education relies on creative and thoughtful use of resources, clear and consistent communication, and a strong commitment to compliance and advocacy - not as opposing forces, but as complementary ones that ultimately protect students and teams alike.

Calm SEAS was founded to provide steady, informed guidance to both families and schools, helping bridge understanding, reduce conflict, and support educational plans that truly serve students.

Outside of my professional work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, daughter, and two rescue pups, exploring the outdoors through camping, and pursuing hobbyist photography. I am also the founder of the Carolina Camping Club (CCC), a community built around connection, shared experiences, and a love of the outdoors.
